Area guide, Livingston Manor and Sullivan County
Farm stays, farm stands, markets and working farms are a big part of why people come to Sullivan County. Here is what agritourism means, where to find it nearby, and how to visit a working farm well.
The basics
Agritourism is travel built around working agriculture. Instead of only visiting a town or a trail, you spend time on or near a real farm: you stay on one, buy from a farm stand, pick your own fruit, or walk a market where the person selling you tomatoes grew them.
It is a quiet, slow way to see a region, and it keeps money with the families who work the land.

Camp, glamp or rent a room on land that is still farmed, with fields, orchards and water close by.

Buy greens, eggs, honey and baked goods straight from the people who grow and make them.

Some farms let you pick your own in season, and nurseries sell trees, plants and vegetable starts to take home.
Why here
Sullivan County mixes farmland, river valleys and small towns, within a few hours of New York City. That combination is hard to find: open fields and clean water on one side, a real Main Street with a diner, a brewery and a bookshop on the other.
Livingston Manor and Roscoe, the two towns in this guide, are known as Trout Town, USA, and the farms around them fit that pace. Visitors tend to pair a farm stay with fly fishing, hiking Beer Mountain, and a Sunday at the farmers market.

Take something home
The simplest agritourism is a shopping trip. Namaste Catskills is a working produce farm in Livingston Manor, and its greens, tomatoes and other crops are sold locally. Garden plot rentals are listed too.
The farm also grows trees, saplings, plants and vegetable starts, and does forest and pollinator conservation work.
See the farm products or read about the nursery and conservation work.

Good manners
A farm is somebody's workplace first. These habits are welcome everywhere.
Call or look online for hours. Many farms are open by season or by appointment, not every day.
Close any gate you open. Animals get out in seconds and are hard to catch.
Do not feed or pet farm animals unless the farmer says yes. Some foods make them sick.
Wash your hands after any animal contact and before you eat.
Supervise kids around animals, water, tools and machinery at all times.
Many farms do not allow dogs because of livestock. Ask before you bring yours.
Many farm stands take cash or run on an honor box. Bring your own bag.
Ask what is ripe this week. It tastes better, and it is what the farm actually has.
Take your trash with you, stay on marked paths and out of crop beds.
