Elevation is the lever, not the calendar
Here is the first thing worth knowing about leaf season in Sullivan County: the color does not arrive everywhere at once, and that is good news for you. It moves downhill. Livingston Manor sits at about 1,401 feet. Shandelee, the ridge right above town, is 2,119 feet. That 700 foot difference means the high ground is already turning while Main Street is still green, so the same weekend can give you two different versions of autumn depending on which road you point the car up.
Which is why we are not going to give you a peak date. Nobody honestly can. What we will tell you is how to play it: check the I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report before you drive, it updates weekly through the season and it is the only tracker worth trusting. Then drive up rather than along. Elevation is the lever.
What to do once you're here
Now for the fun part, because staring at trees is only half a weekend.
The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum is five minutes from us and the grounds are free and open year round. You do not have to fish, you do not have to know anything about fishing, you can simply walk the property along the Willowemoc and understand within about ninety seconds why people have been obsessed with this river for a hundred and fifty years. If you do want to go inside, check their hours before you come.
Bethel Woods has its museum open through December 31, and the Harvest Festival runs Sundays through October 4 and costs nothing. Free festival, in October, on the Woodstock field. Go.
Three breweries, and we have been to all of them, so here is the honest steer. Catskill Brewery has a real fall calendar worth checking before you arrive. Do Good Spirits is Do Good Spirits and needs no explanation once you are through the door. And if the weather is behaving and you want to be outside with a drink and a view, Upward Brewing is the one. The outdoor setup there is the strongest of the three and on a clear October afternoon it is genuinely hard to beat.
One piece of planning that catches people out: the farmers markets wind down through late October and November, and the Callicoon winter market does not start until December. So if buying local produce is on your list, do it early in your trip rather than saving it for Sunday morning.
