November gets written off around here and we think that is a mistake. The leaf peepers have gone home, the roads are yours, and everything good is still open. If you like a place better when you are not queuing for it, this is your month.
What is actually running
The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum is open through November, and this is the detail to plan around: it closes December 9 through January 9. So November is your window if you want the inside of the building and not just the riverbank. The grounds stay free and open regardless.
Bethel Woods keeps its museum going through December 31. On a cold, empty November weekday you get the place more or less to yourself, which is a completely different experience to seeing it in festival season.
All three breweries are still going. We have been to each one and they all hold up in November, though the calculation shifts a bit once it is properly cold. Upward has the outdoor advantage when the weather cooperates, so if you get one of those bright still November afternoons, that is where to be. Do Good Spirits and Catskill Brewery are both easy indoor afternoons when it is not.
The gap in the markets
Food shopping needs a plan this month. The summer farmers markets are done or winding down, and the Callicoon winter market does not open until December, so November sits in the gap between the two. Worth knowing before you arrive expecting a Saturday market.
What November really offers is room. The Willowemoc without a soul on it. A brewery where you can actually get the good table. A museum you can walk through at your own pace. Bring a proper coat, come anyway, and enjoy having the place to yourself.
